David Martin was born in Glasgow in 1922. He studied at Glasgow School of Art under Hugh Crawford and David Donaldson. During the war he served with the RAF from 1942 to 1946. In 1949 he was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute and not long after Vice-President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours.
